London, UK, 7th January:  Artificial Intelligence Engineer, Artificial Intelligence Researcher, and Environmental Officer are among the top 20 fastest growing jobs in the UK, according to new data from LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional network.

The list – which comes as LinkedIn platform data reveals the jobs market is cooling and hiring is slowing – reveals that emerging roles in tech and sustainability are creating new opportunities. However, in spite of these emerging roles, 45% of UK HR professionals say their company doesn’t have a clear view on the skills it will need in the coming years.

Work in 2025

With the skills needed for jobs in the UK expected to change by 65% by 2030 (since 2016), accelerated by rapid developments in AI**, job seekers and HR professionals alike are navigating a highly complex hiring landscape. In fact, nearly 55% of LinkedIn’s UK Jobs on the Rise did not exist 25 years ago.

The list reveals that AI and green skills are becoming more critical, as 20% of UK workers worry they lack the skills needed for the future***. This concern is replicated in the hiring process as LinkedIn research shows sourcing candidates with technical skills (43%) and sustainability skills (19%) was found to be the most challenging by HR professionals.

“New AI and sustainability roles are redefining work, but the competition for these roles and the need for upskilling are adding pressure,” says Janine Chamberlin, Head of LinkedIn UK. “Yet, amidst these challenges, there is hope – over a third of job seekers are optimistic that the job market will improve in 2025. Resilience, adaptability, and continuous learning will be key to navigating this rapidly changing landscape. And for businesses looking to make the most of the opportunities presented by new and emerging technologies, it’s clear that investing in upskilling initiatives, and AI tools to help their HR teams, will be vital.”

The list demonstrates how work is changing and technology is creating new opportunities, with two AI roles in the top 10 – including AI Engineer at the top of the list.

The research reveals the resilience and flexibility of the UK workforce, as 56% are open to taking on a role in a new industry or area and 27% would like opportunities to learn new, in-demand skills to help them grow in their career.
