UK HGV training firm offers discount to incentivise driver uptake and help plug the industry gap

The team at The LGV Training Company is today announcing a new discount on its HGV training services to incentivise businesses and individuals into the HGV driving route, as the country faces a devastating impending impact from driver shortages.

After weeks and months of the industry under the spotlight due to driver shortage – both as a result and direct impact of Brexit and Covid-19 – Callum Daly, head of sales at the company, is concerned.  He explains:

“The haulage industry is on the cusp of a nationwide crisis – arguably to us, it reached that point a month ago. Brexit and Covid can be blamed as much as businesses or people want for the driver shortage, but this debate doesn’t solve the immediate crisis and problem.

“In the immediate future, we urge Defra and the UK government to consider working more closely with firms like ours, to train and recruit more UK drivers urgently. At a time when unemployment is high as we ease out of the pandemic, there is an opportunity for many to train and upskill in a needed industry.

“The solution first and foremost is to bring in more workers into the industry. Failing this, the impact goes way beyond delayed online retail orders or a missing food item on a supermarket shelf for the end consumer; it is going to cause widespread panic, as the sheer knock on impact is much bigger than these small delays, it is unfathomable impact on all aspects of the supply chain that will disrupt businesses and the economy around the UK.

“Restaurants with low food and drinks supply will be forced to close. Retailers will not have the stock to sell goods and warrant being open. As the impact of “freedom day” is realised as our new normal unfolds, this will only become more disastrous as haulage capacity cannot simply meet the UK demand as it stands.”

“We’re actively exploring fast ways to incentivise and encourage more UK citizens into this route of employment, and to do our bit and play our part in turning this around, we are now going to start offering discounts on courses too, as we want to do all within our power to fix this industry issue before it blows up and impacts direct consumers,” comments Daly.

The company’s response to the crisis has been to introduce new offers, including a new offer of £50 off for Category C courses and £100 off its B2B offering in the Corporate HGV training courses.

This financial incentive lands at a time when the country is facing a severe delivery dilemma but also unemployment fears. Following on from the pandemic and job losses in other industries, the team at The LGV Training Company are hoping this can help to open new career paths and avenues for those out of work across the UK too;

“The average wage of an HGV driver these days is up to £35,000 per year, and with the driver training being just 4 days there has never been a better time to get trained, as all new drivers should be in high demand,” Daly adds.
